MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST

SUMMARY:

The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing, analyzing, and interpreting clinical laboratory tests. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of results.

Collects and conducts chemical analysis of body fluids including blood, urine, and spinal fluid to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.

Operates, calibrates, and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Performs, develops, standardizes, evaluates, and modifies procedures, techniques and tests used in the analysis of specimens and in medical laboratory experiments.

Prepares and maintains charts, work logs, quality assurance records, patient test documentation, and other reports as needed.

Schedules patients, orders supplies, contacts vendors, provides technical assistance, and assumes responsibility for laboratory operation in absence of supervisor.

Participates in bi-yearly state inspections.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of principles and theories of chemistry, microbiology, and related health sciences. Knowledge of the methods and techniques of medical laboratory testing, equipment operation, and maintenance. Ability to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of co-workers and/or subordinates. Ability to perform clinical laboratory tests and analyze and interpret results. Ability to maintain laboratory equipment. Ability to prepare reports and maintain records. ? Ability to communicate effectively.????

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, microbiology, or a related field; plus one year of experience in medical technology or a related field.

Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.

OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
