HOSPITAL TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY:

The Hospital Technician is responsible for providing assistance in routine patient care and medically related administrative support activities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Communicates with dispatcher and treatment center personnel to provide patient vital statistics and medical history and to arrange reception of patients.

Monitors and records patients’ vital signs, measures height and weight, prepares patient for treatment and records care instructions/physician orders on required forms/logs.

Collects specimens, performs postmortem care, treats and dresses wounds or abrasions, performs catheterizations, and administers routine treatment.

Operates computer terminal to retrieve information and enters data on admissions, transfers, and other patient information.

Observes, records and reports to physician patient condition or injury, treatment provided and reactions to drug and treatment and assembles files and lab reports in patient charts.

Decontaminates ambulance interior, sets up sterile fields, inventories and replenishes medical supplies, orders new supplies, as necessary, and maintains safe patient care environment.

Serves as team leader for nursing assistants and escorts, provides new employee orientation, and assists in training.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of hospital policy and procedures.

Knowledge of patient care and personal hygiene procedures.

Knowledge of general clerical techniques and procedures.

Ability to communicate and disseminate information concerning patients.

Ability to coordinate patient care and administrative support activities.

Ability to assist patients and record basic medical information.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of experience in a medical environment or a related area. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must be certified by a recognized entity in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
