ASU ASST DIRECTOR OF FARMING

SUMMARY:

The Arkansas State University (ASU) Assistant Director of Farming is responsible for the areas of livestock, forage farming, maintenance, and academic laboratory instruction in the university farm operation. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

 TYPICAL FUNCTIONS: 

Oversees general livestock at farm, including such areas as breeding, preventive medicine program, animal husbandry, parturition (birthing), and artificial insemination.

 Manages forage farming activities, including land preparation, planting, cultivation, chemical and fertilizer application, irrigation, and harvesting. Supervises maintenance of farm facilities and equipment by assisting with maintenance and repairs, maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, and examining new construction. Works with academic personnel regarding laboratory instruction by making necessary preparation for animals, assisting with special tests, and demonstrating technical procedures. Discusses areas of responsibilities with farm director and provides input into planning of operations. Maintains various records related to animal weights, birthdates, and pedigrees, collects revenues, medications, illnesses, and other farm statistics. Conducts tours of farm operations for various educational, agricultural, and community groups. 

Performs other duties as assigned.

 KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Knowledge of the principles and practices of livestock and forage agriculture. Knowledge of agricultural governmental regulations. Knowledge of farm equipment and facilities maintenance needs. Knowledge of agricultural academic requirements. Ability to oversee and manage livestock, forage farming, and farm maintenance operations. Ability to assist in agricultural academic instruction. Ability to maintain agricultural records and statistics. 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

 The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree with a major in agriculture, agricultural business, or related field; plus two years of experience in farming operations or a related area. 

Additional requirements determined by the institution for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.

OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
