RADIO NEWS DIRECTOR

SUMMARY:

 The Radio News Director is responsible for coordinating the coverage and reporting of major campus and community news stories. This position is governed by Federal Communication Commission (FCC) regulations, state and federal laws, and institution policy. 

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

 Supervises a group of students assigned to cover specific news events by making work assignments, by reviewing work and providing training. Gathers information concerning newsworthy items from regional news sources, meetings, and telephone interviews to determine news items to be broadcast from the radio station. Determines time schedules for airing news stories. Reads news stories on air, according to broadcast format at regularly scheduled periods, and maintains files of completed scripts and newsworthy materials. Coordinates news coverage of elections, conventions, university programs and other newsworthy events, writes broadcast copy, and prepares news documentaries for broadcast. Receives news from wire services, makes editorial decisions before broadcasts, and keeps abreast of Federal Communication Commission rules and regulations. Produces, hosts, and writes feature programs. 

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Knowledge of news reporting techniques and procedures. Knowledge of station operations and procedures. Knowledge of Federal Communication Commission rules and regulations relating to radio broadcasting. Knowledge of news editing techniques. Ability to supervise the work of subordinates. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate news broadcasts and format.

Ability to evaluate radio news operations. Ability to operate radio station broadcast equipment.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

 The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, or a related field; plus two years of experience in broadcasting or a related area. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess FCC restricted radiotelephone operator permit. 

Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.

OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
