COORDINATOR OF SPORTS INFORMATION

SUMMARY:

The Coordinator of Sports Information is responsible for the overall coordination of athletic information. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Interviews athletes and coaches to gather information for use in news releases or feature stories.

Attends athletic practice sessions and road games to report activities in articles, stories, or by video.

Maintains athletic department websites by updating athletic information, creating video content, and identifying and correcting malfunctions.

Writes, edits, and prepares copy for feature stories, media guides, and hometown releases about athletes and athletic programs.

Disseminates information, such as news releases and fact sheets, to newspaper, radio and television media, wire services, and athletic opponents.

Responds to press and media inquiries by preparing copy, arranging interviews, scheduling photography sessions, and calling press conferences.

Plans and coordinates media coverage of athletics by issuing invitations, entertaining and accommodating media personnel, preparing press guides, and arranging for needed facilities, equipment, supplies, and extra staff.

Compiles athletic statistical information and submits to intercollegiate conference office, athletic opponents, and various specialty publications.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS:

Frequent in-state and occasional out-of-state travel to athletic events is required..

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of journalism. Knowledge of language usage for writing and speaking purposes. Knowledge of the operation of an athletic program. Ability to direct and organize production and publication of athletic information. Ability to compose news releases related to athletic events. Ability to maintain and update an athletic website. Ability to plan and coordinate media activities. Ability to maintain statistical information and compile into report form.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a major in journalism, public relations, communications or a related field; plus two years of experience in journalism or public relations involving athletic programs or a related area.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must possess a valid Arkansas driver
