RESIDENT HALL SPECIALIST
SUMMARY:
The Resident Hall Specialist is responsible for administering student residence occupancy programs, interpreting residential hall policies, and providing guidance for students in residence halls. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Plans social and academic programs in residence halls, assists student committees and planning groups as advisor, coordinates program activities among residence halls, evaluates program effectiveness, maintains program records, and prepares reports concerning activity, goals and results.
Interprets housing rules and regulations to students, checks students in an out of rooms, makes room assignments and adjustments, maintains and updates occupancy reports, checks room conditions, and maintains inventory.
Coordinates building security program, reports repairs and maintenance needed in resident halls, requests housekeeping and custodial services for problem areas needing attention, and requisitions equipment and supplies.
Prepares activity reports, assists in planning, and attends workshops, attends weekly staff meetings, and notifies other departments of student’s occupancy status, and maintains current resident files.
Counsels residents and establishes rapport, makes referrals to counseling center or student health services, and assists in resolving roommate or floor problems.
May supervise resident hall staff by hiring, training, providing general instructions, prioritizing work assignments, establishing deadlines, and reviewing the work performed to ensure accuracy and compliance with established policies and procedures.
Enrolls students in and out of rooms, issues keys and temporary meal tickets, makes room assignments, inspects rooms for cleanliness, and monitors building and facilities for security.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of academic and social programs. Knowledge of housing rules and regulations. Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement student residence programs. Ability to disseminate information orally and in writing. Ability to advise students with personal problems, complaints, and concerns. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. Ability to supervise residence hall staff. Ability to make procedural decisions and judgments and maintain discipline within institution housing.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of experience working with college student social and academic programs, or a related area, including one year in a residential setting or a related area.
Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
