MEDICAL RECORDS TECHNICIAN
SUMMARY:
The Medical Records Technician is responsible for maintaining medical records that meet accreditation standards and comply with required regulations, policies, and procedures. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintains, secures, and releases confidential medical information, in accordance with established laws, regulations, and procedures.
Completes review of medical records, including admissions and discharge.
Enters patient information into database and codes medical information and chart status.
Receives and enters statistical and diagnostic information.
Produces and reviews reports, analyzes data, and identifies and corrects record errors.
Transcribes medical information or edits transcribed records.
Performs duties related to file maintenance, including archiving and scanning.
Answers written and oral inquiries, by interpreting directives, policies, and procedures, to ensure consistent application. .
Receives, sorts, and distributes correspondence, records, and information to appropriate personnel and the general public.
Conducts data entry into complex databases and systems and develops queries to gather information and reports.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of applicable medical laws, regulations and terminology. Knowledge of computers and software application programs. Knowledge of coding and recordkeeping procedures. Ability to perform data entry and manipulate data to generate reports and documents.
Ability to compose, proofread and edit correspondence, reports and other documents related to medical records.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of specialized training in medical terminology; plus one year of experience in medical records operations or a related area.
Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
