MEDICAL RECORDS SUPERVISOR
SUMMARY:
The Medical Records Supervisor is responsible for operations involved in maintaining medical records and reports. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Provides supervision to subordinate employees by prioritizing work assignments, establishing deadlines, providing general instructions and reviewing work performed to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with instructions or established policies and procedures.
Monitors records processing and disposition of clinical records, reviews posting and coding of patients diseases, diagnosis, treatment, and other medical information, and researches methods and procedures for recording, filing, and indexing records.
Receives and evaluates accumulated statistics and reports, examines requests for patient information from hospital personnel, legal authorities, and physicians, and releases medical information in accordance with established rules and regulations.
Prepares statistical and narrative medical-related reports, such as extended care studies, disease incidence evaluations, and payment comparisons by developing research methodology and criteria and designing data gathering instruments.
Attends various meetings regarding medical records and provides technical assistance on state and federal regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of medical records administration theories and procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques. Ability to monitor records processing and disposition. Ability to design data gathering instruments for statistical analysis. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in records management or a related field; plus one year of experience in medical record keeping or a related area; including one year in a supervisory capacity.
Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
