MEDICAL RECORDS ASSISTANT

SUMMARY:

The Medical Records Assistant is responsible for transcribing medical data and providing administrative support. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Transcribes medical data, such as clinic notes, physician reports, medical summaries, manuscripts, memos, grants, teaching syllabi, and forms.

Reviews and edits transcribed reports or dictated material for spelling, grammar, clarity, consistency, and proper medical terminology.

Performs a variety of clerical and office tasks such as handling incoming and outgoing mail, completing and submitting insurance claims, typing, filing and operating office machines.

Receives patients, schedules appointments, and maintains patient records.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of standard transcription techniques and procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology. Ability to spell and use business English. Ability to operate transcription equipment, word processor, and standard office machines.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of specialized training in medical terminology or a related field and/or experience in the use of medical terminology or a related field.

Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.

OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
