LIBRARY SUPERVISOR
SUMMARY:
The Library Supervisor is responsible for supervising the library operations and services and monitoring the activities of a local library unit or department. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Provides supervision to a staff of library technicians and performs library services in a library.
Interviews, hires, trains and evaluates performance of technical assistants and student workers.
Searches, verifies, processes, and catalogues specialized materials by format and topic.
Establishes unit or departmental priorities and plans and directs the work of the unit.
Creates, maintains, and resolves problems relating to bibliographic and check-in records.
Performs complex bibliographic searches to obtain or verify information and evaluates search results for conflicting findings.
Performs complicated research techniques to authenticate manuscripts and identifies manuscript provenance.
Provides technical assistance to patrons with complex reference and circulation requests, problems, or questions.
Coordinates library units involving patron services, library related organizations, or library branches.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of multiple units of the library and other library-related organizations. Knowledge of library services and specialized areas of library operations and procedures. Knowledge of supervisory and management principles and techniques. Knowledge of specialized library services, systems and coordination.
Knowledge of verifying, processing, and cataloging complex and specialized materials. Ability to plan and organize work activities of subordinate employees. Ability to coordinate technical processing operations. Ability to utilize library computer software and applications.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in library sciences or related field; plus two years of experience in library services, including one year in a leadership capacity.
Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
