LAB ASSISTANT

SUMMARY:

The Lab Assistant is responsible for preparation and clean-up of equipment and supplies used in a clinical laboratory. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Prepares supplies and maintains inventory of equipment used in clinical laboratory tests.

Prepares media and regents according to formulas by calculating quantities, weights or other measurements.

Sterilizes equipment from laboratories, such as swabs, sticks, tissue grinders, tubing needles, and glass tubes.

Assists lower level laboratory aides in preparation and processing procedures for laboratory experiments and other tests.

Maintains records of samples and other test requirements.

Performs preliminary examinations and compares related test results.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS:

Work requires frequent use of various laboratory chemicals and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of routine laboratory procedures. Ability to prepare materials and equipment for laboratory tests. Ability to maintain test records. Ability to prepare arithmetic calculations. Ability to read, follow, and/or apply instructions and procedures to clinical laboratory tests.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma.

Additional requirements determined by the institution for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.

OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
