ENGINEER SUPERVISOR

SUMMARY:

The Engineer Supervisor is responsible for conducting engineering studies, developing design drawings and/or specifications, supervising employees and performing related administrative duties. This position is governed by state and federal law and institution policy.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Directs the activities of a medium to large professional staff by interviewing, hiring, training, assigning and reviewing work, counseling, and evaluating the performance of incumbents.

Inspects sites to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and state and federal regulations during all phases of construction and/or inspects existing facilities for fire and safety code compliance and proper equipment operation. Completes reports of findings and takes necessary action to correct deficiencies.

Designs, drafts, and/or reviews plans of proposed projects. Reviews engineering reports, plans, specifications for compliance with all regulations and guidelines. Administers contracts. Provides engineering surveys.

Reviews various permit applications for compliance with applicable laws and regulations recommending approval of denial of permits.

Consults with public officials, consulting engineers, and architects concerning design recommendations and/or design modifications for projects. Responds to inquiries concerning civil and environmental engineer laws and practices within the state of Arkansas.

Utilizes various computer programs for data and information gathering, formula calculations, various studies and report generating. Prepares written reports.

Conducts meetings or attends public hearings and meetings and presents workshops to local officials providing information and explaining agency policies.

Provides information, suggestions, advice and technical assistance to city, county and district officials in various practices and programs by answering questions, interpreting applicable laws and regulations and coordinating with other entities to resolve problems.

May act as a team leader on projects by interviewing and recommending for hire, assigning, overseeing, and reviewing work, and training new employees.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS:

Must be able to work outdoors and on construction sites, if applicable to the educational specialty. May be exposed to hazards in the field or the laboratory.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering relating to the work performed. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing the field of engineering. Knowledge of construction plans and designs. Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Ability to inspect plans and/or structures to determine compliance with regulations. Ability to prepare and present technical information verbally and in writing. Ability to design and draft construction plans and write specifications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in chemical, electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering, or a related field; plus five years of experience in engineering relating to the work performed, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must be licensed as a Professional Engineer by the State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in accordance with ACA 17-30-301.

Additional requirements determined by the institution for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.

OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
