CASHIER
SUMMARY:
The Cashier is responsible for examining documents, preparing applications, collecting taxes and fees, issuing licenses and legal documents, and collecting monies from payments and cash sales. This position is governed by state and federal law and institution policy.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Reviews documentation to ensure compliance with legal requirements and processes
transactions to issue licenses and identification cards, and/or motor vehicle licenses, duplicate titles, and revenue stamps. Types applications for transactions processed.
Calculates fees and/or taxes due, assesses penalties for late payments, receive money, verifies amounts, and writes receipt.
Assists supervisor in processing payments on student accounts, writes receipts, processes refunds, and may verify or distribute financial aid awards to students.
Prepares money for deposits, requests adequate change funds for subordinate cashiers, and resolves problems or conflicts with customers.
Prepares daily report of transactions processed and monies collected.
Balances/reconciles cash received with amounts recorded. Compiles data for monthly reports and maintains files for audit purposes.
Administers vision tests and takes photographs for drivers licenses and identification cards.
Maintains inventory and requisition supplies.
Answers telephone and greets visitors providing assistance and information. May assist in training new cashiers.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of bookkeeping and record keeping practices.
Knowledge of standard office practices. Knowledge of basic mathematics. Ability to research files, verify information, and complete forms and applications. Ability to calculate taxes, fees, and penalties. Ability to operate standard office equipment including camera and vision testing equipment. Ability to compile data, prepare reports, and maintain files.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
The formal equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of experience in customer service, clerical work, or a related field.
Additional requirements determined by the institution for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
