ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY:

The Accounting Technician is responsible for performing technical bookkeeping duties in support of accounting operations. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintains manual or automated accounting records of the organization by posting transactions to journals or ledgers and balancing and reconciling errors.

Prepares vendor invoices for payment by applying appropriate account and code numbers, receives electronically prepared invoices for payment, and posts revenue and expenses to internal spreadsheets.

Produces reports from automated information systems to verify balances against internal records.

Receives warrants, delivers or sends to vendor or contractor, and posts expenditures to appropriate ledger applying proper character or allocation codes.

Provides technical assistance to internal and external departmental staff in areas such as warrant cancellation, preparation of vouchers or billings, fund balances, processing policies or procedures, and legal requirements governing financial transactions.

Researches accounts for payments/adjustments, recalls accounts assigned to collection agencies, and communicates with agencies on status of accounts.

Conducts inventory of supplies and equipment, maintains inventory records and orders supplies and equipment as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Ability to operate standard office equipment and produce reports from automated information systems. Ability to maintain accounting records manually or electronically. Ability to research, identify, and resolve discrepancies in accounting transactions. Ability to provide technical assistance to internal and external staff regarding accounting policies and procedures.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of experience in bookkeeping, banking or a related field.

Additional requirements determined by the institution for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.

OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
